Day 1 - June 13, 2024

  • Welcome and Opening Remarks 9:00 - 9:15 a.m.
  • Exploring the Philosophy and Practices of Open Education 9:15 - 10:45 a.m.

In open education, the goal is to increase access to education by changing the way we think about knowledge. Instead of bundling up knowledge in an expensive textbook or putting it behind a paywall, open education sees knowledge as a public good that should be freely available to everyone to learn from, build on, and customize for their own purposes. In this session, we will explore open education as a philosophy, look at the frameworks and structures that make it possible, and then dig into examples and opportunities to put open education into practice.

This session will be facilitated by Josie Gray.

  • Break 10:45 - 11:05 a.m.

Please note that refreshments will not be provided.

  • Crafting your Positionality Statement 11:05 a.m. - 12:05 p.m.

Positionality refers to the dynamic relationship between an individual and their various personal and social identities, including gender, race, class, ethnicity, ability, and place. For facilitators, crafting a positionality statement serves as a crucial self-reflective exercise, revealing how one's biases, histories, and intersections shape their teaching approach. In this workshop, we will explore positionality statements and their role in the context of teaching and learning. We will also examine personal, place-based, and social identities and reflect how these layers influence our teaching practices. Participants will have a chance to start creating their own positonality statements.

This session will be facilitated by Britt Dzioba.

  • Lunch 12:05 - 1:05 p.m.

Please note that refreshments will not be provided.

  • Dig Deeper: Special Topics in Evaluating and Adapting OER 1:05 - 2:05 p.m.

Let's dig deeper into the practices and considerations that can come up when people are ready to move forward with adopting or adapting an open educational resource (OER). For this session, attendees will vote on which special topic to dig into. Possibilities include evaluating OER for adoption, the challenges of adaptation, using fair dealing in OER, and how generative artificial intelligence might be leveraged in OER creation and adaptation.

This session will be facilitated by Josie Gray.

  • Break 2:05 - 2:25 p.m.
  • Liberating Structures: What's New? 2:25 - 3:55 p.m.

Experience and learn some new and emerging activities and practices coming out of Liberating Structures communities worldwide. This session will suit both beginners and experienced practitioners, and leave participants with ideas and resources to try in their own facilitation work.

This session will be facilitated by Tracy Roberts.

  • Social Event 4:15 - 6:15 p.m.

The BCcampus Roadshow team will be hosting a social event at The Noble Pig from approximately 4:15 p.m. – 6:15 p.m.

We will provide a variety of menu options along with two drink tickets for beer, wine, cider, or any non-alcoholic items. Dietary requests will be available.

The Noble Pig is an approximate nine-minute drive from the campus. If you do not have transportation, we have arrangements with Yellow Cabs Kamloops for those who require taxi service. Please pick up a taxi voucher from the registration desk. We will also offer taxi vouchers after the social event. Please do not drink and drive.

Day 2 - June 14, 2024

  • Welcome and Opening Remarks 9:00 - 9:10 a.m.
  • Threading Equity Throughout Open Educational Resources 9:10 - 10:40 a.m.

Creating OER with equity at its core requires intention and planning. Without this foresight, there is a risk of perpetuating biases and harm that exist both in the field of study and society at large. This includes the potential for inaccessible content, offensive language, harmful stereotypes, and the undue promotion of dominant cultural norms, knowledge, and identities (such as white, abled, male, cisgender, heterosexual, etc.). In this session, we dig into the concept of "equity" within the realms of OER design, content creation, and pedagogy. We explore the tools, practices, and processes essential for fostering equity within OER development.

This session is facilitated by Josie Gray.

  • Break 10:40 - 11:00 a.m.

Please note that refreshments will not be provided.

  • Accessibility for Online Educators 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

This workshop covers the basics of accessibility as it applies to educational materials. We will introduce assistive technologies and explain how to design things like text, tables, images, videos, audio, links, and math equations so they are accessible to all students.

This session is facilitated by Josie Gray.

  • Lunch 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.

Please note that refreshments will not be provided.

  • Introduction to Digital Literacy OER 1:00 - 2:30 p.m.

This interactive workshop will provide an introduction to the B.C. Digital Literacy Framework and its relevance to teaching and learning practices. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the recently launched Digital Literacy Hub by BCcampus. This hub houses a curated collection of high-quality OER designed to enhance participants' digital literacy skills or seamlessly integrate into their teaching methodologies.

This session is facilitated by Britt Dzioba.

  • Break 2:30 - 2:50 p.m.

Please note that refreshments will not be provided.

  • Closing Activity and Remarks 2:50 - 3:20 p.m.

One more for the road! Join us for a short and lively end-of-day send-off session with the whole BCcampus Roadshow team.
